Friday 22nd June 2012 - Progress report!!!!

Before the END of the period today, you and your group/partner have to supply a PROGRESS REPORT in the form as a comment to this blog post.

You need to detail the following things....

  • Names of people in your group
  • WHAT Natural Disaster you have chosen and for WHICH area (city / region?)
  • NAME of the expert you have chosen to contact for information for your research project and how you are going to contact him. Also detail the types of questions you are going to ask him...
  •  A couple of sentences detailing WHAT research you have undertaken so far and how much data you have accumulated and WHERE you intend to find more data.
  • REMEMBER - you need to use books / internet /  talk to school leaders / interview an expert / and produce a survey in GoogleDOCS to survey family/friends/school pupils/community (go into documents and then Create and select Form to create a survey form - we tried this during Thursday's class! ) to find the relevant information you need....

Post a comment to the end of this post to fulfill this task!! Go to it people!!

Cheers,
  Ms Fridd.

    3. Mr Garry. I will contact him by e-mail and maybe interveiw him in person. These are my questions:

*What would the school do if there is a Snow Storm*

    - If there was a snow storm what would the school do?

    - Would the students be sent home or stay at school?

    - What would the bus students do?

    - Has the school had to deal with anything like this is the past?

    - Who makes the decision as to if school is on or off?

    - If the school has a procedure for snow storms?

So far I have started reaserching on the internet about snow storms and how to avoid and prepair for them. I intened to go to the libary and read books on snow storms and maybe e-mail the dunedin defence minister.

    2) We are doing Flooding in Queensland. Mainly into Brisbane.
    3) Sorry We haven't found an expert yet. We will get back to that. :\
    4) We have found out what floods are: they are most likely to occur after an earthquake causing a Tsunami. Or after a long period of rain. We have found most of our data on Wikipedia, but we plan to visit other websites and research into books.
    5) We shall work on the Survey Now.

  3. harry Hassleman and jack gibbons have chosen earthquakes in Dunedin. we are going to ask the civil defence dude that you talked about. we have been on geonet and watched a video on what would happen if an earthquake happened in Dunedin. we need to look for more sites on the internet and the library is useless because almost all of the information is outdated.

-we have chosen tsunamis and for dunedin, new zealand
-the expert we have chosen is currently not known but the outfit we have chosen to contact is the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, our questions are as follows:
how likely would dunedin on the east coast of new zealand be to be hit by a major tsunami
    · How frequently do they happen in new zealand

    · What causes tsunamis?

    · How severe can tsunamis be?

    · What impact do they have on people, animals, and environment, in New Zealand?

    · How can people in New Zealand protect themselves from tsunamis?

    · How well does your disaster management help when tsunamis strike in New Zealand?

so far we have done mainly internet research, the data we have accumulated is minimal as we have just been browsing websites, we intend 50% of our research to be online, and the other 50% will be on books, magazines, newspaper articles, online surveys, experts thoughts etc...

We have picked the snow storm for Dunedin.
The expert we have chosen is Glen Mitchell
    His contact details are:
    Email - gdmitche@dcc.govt.nz
    Phone Number - (03) 474 3111
We are going to ask Glen If Dunedin has the machinery for dealing with a snow storms, How deep does the snow have to be for the state highways (north and south) to be closed. How deep does the snow have to be for it to be considered a snow storm. Do you have to call in machinery from other countries/ cities.
We are going to research the questions that are in our survey on google documents. Questions like What would you do for heating if electricity was cut out, What is the minimum outside temperature for a snow storm to occur and where should you go if a major snow storm hit your city. We want to get information from books in our library and we are also going to ask Mr Idour for extra information from a professional.
